Mac Privacy Guide: VPN, Proxy, Tor and Private Relay
Privacy tools cover different traffic and require different trust. Choose based on the activity you need to protect, not a promise of complete anonymity.
Hiding an IP address is only one layer
Websites can also identify accounts, cookies, browser characteristics, and behavior. A VPN, proxy, Private Relay, or Tor does not make unsafe downloads, phishing, or account sharing private.
Start with the data flow
Your internet provider normally sees that your connection reaches services, while destination sites see a public network address. An intermediary changes parts of that path, but becomes part of the trust model. Keep macOS and browsers updated, use unique passwords and multi-factor authentication, and grant apps only the permissions they need.
